Foodberry, a Boston-based food innovation company and manufacturer, has partnered with fourth-generation cranberry producer Cape Cod Select to launch a new line of Frozen Smoothie Bites that reimagine how consumers can enjoy one of New England’s most iconic fruits—just in time for the holiday season.
Developed using Foodberry’s proprietary technology, the dairy-free, gluten-free Smoothie Bites combine a real fruit coating with a creamy, coconut cream-based smoothie center. They bring the fruit flavor and creamy texture of a smoothie into a bite-sized frozen snack, ready to enjoy straight from the freezer—with no blender or preparation required. With a suggested retail price of $6.99, the line launches in two flavors:
- Strawberry Cranana: A cranberry-based outer coating wrapped around a strawberry-banana smoothie center.
- Peaches & Cran: A juicy peach coating with a frozen cranberry smoothie center.
A New Way to Enjoy Real Fruit
Inspired by how nature wraps and protects fresh fruits and vegetables, Foodberry’s technology uses real fruit and other plant-based ingredients to create self-contained, bite-sized snacks in frozen, refrigerated and shelf-stable formats. Supported by more than 20 issued utility patents, the platform allows food and beverage companies to rethink familiar ingredients and products in innovative forms. For Cape Cod Select, it opened a new way to bring its cranberries from the bog to the freezer aisle.
From the Cranberry Bog to the Frozen Snack Aisle
The partnership brings together Foodberry’s food technology and product-development expertise with Cape Cod Select’s deep roots in cranberry farming. Owned and operated by the Rhodes family for over 70 years, Cape Cod Select’s cranberry-growing operation, Edgewood Bogs, spans approximately 800 acres in Massachusetts and produces between six and seven million pounds of cranberries annually.
A key priority in developing the new products was ensuring that the cranberry component started with Cape Cod Select’s own fruit—not simply cranberry flavoring. The companies worked together to create a purée that could be incorporated into Foodberry’s manufacturing platform, while retaining fine cranberry fibers, skin and seeds. That texture helps preserve the character of real fruit and gives the bites an experience closer to a smoothie than a juice-based frozen snack.
“What excites us about this partnership is the opportunity to take an ingredient people already know and love and show what else it can become,” said Marty Kolewe, CEO of Foodberry. “Cape Cod Select brought us exceptional cranberries and generations of expertise in the fruit, and our technology allowed us to translate that ingredient into entirely new bite-sized formats. It’s exactly the kind of innovation Foodberry was built to enable.”
Concept to Market in Nine Months
The collaboration grew out of Cape Cod Select’s own exploration of frozen smoothie cubes. After discovering Foodberry — located less than an hour away — the company saw an opportunity to pair the flavor profiles it had been developing with Foodberry’s existing technology, R&D expertise and manufacturing capabilities. The two companies brought the product from their first development conversations to market in approximately nine months.
“We have been growing cranberries for generations, but we are always looking for new ways to bring this incredible fruit to consumers,” said Cindy Rhodes, Founder and CEO of Cape Cod Select. “Smoothie Bites are a perfect example of that. Foodberry helped us take our own cranberries and turn them into something completely unexpected—a delicious, convenient and snackable indulgence that you can enjoy straight from the freezer. We couldn’t be more excited to introduce them.”
Coming to Freezers This Fall
The Smoothie Bites recently launched at Meijer stores, with distribution expanding to Hannaford and The GIANT Company in the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic as of October 1. The products are also set to arrive at Market Basket in October, with online availability coming soon through Cape Cod Select.
All Foodberry products are developed and produced at the company’s R&D and manufacturing facility in Boston, Massachusetts. Current commercial product platforms include fruit-coated ice cream and smoothie bites, juice-filled fruit bites, and fruit-and-nut-butter bites.
